About zaum
ZAUM, meaning beyond sense, was started over thirty-five years ago, first as Mandala, and ZAUM since 1996, by Gillian Conoley, a professor at Sonoma State University as well as the author of seven collections of poetry. What may have started out as just a passion for editing grew into a literary magazine whose renowned work and visual arts has won several awards from the Associated Writing Program for: editorial vision (1996), and graphic design (1998). Issues #6 and #7 had pieces of work nominated for the Pushcart Prize, a nationally recognized award.
While most work is from students at Sonoma State of California, we've gotten submissions from as far as Wisconsin to Canada and everywhere in between. Even though ZAUM is a highly recognized magazine, Sonoma State has another literary magazine as well called Volt, which is a nationally recognized magazine created and edited by Gillian Conoley. It contains work from renowned writers and has won many national awards.
ZAUM accepts work from any college student and is also ran completely by the student body at Sonoma State University. In its 22nd year of publication, the pieces we receive are so diverse and creative it's hard not being able to accept everything we get sent to us. ZAUM is able to push boundaries on what can be called art, and we pride ourselves in being able to recognize the different ways people express themselves through art as a medium. We encourage everyone to express themselves in a world that tells you no.
